Decking
What affects the cost of decking installation?
Deck area alone does not define the price. A low platform on open ground is different from a raised deck with steps and finished edges.

Area is only the starting measurement
The deck footprint indicates the board quantity, but not the full structure. The height above ground, support spacing, joist direction and connection to paths or doors can change the build substantially.
A small raised deck with several steps and balustrades may require more work than a larger simple platform.
What should appear in the scope
A clear quotation identifies the board product and the work beneath it.
- Removal of existing deck, paving or vegetation
- Ground preparation and weed-control approach where appropriate
- Support and subframe material, layout and ventilation
- Board profile, colour, fixing method and laying direction
- Steps, fascia, borders, handrails and balustrades
- Access, waste removal and protection of the house or garden
Details that are easy to underestimate
Neat edges around drains, posts, trees and buildings take time. Hidden access hatches, picture-frame borders and changes of board direction also increase cutting and support requirements.
Composite systems may require specific clips, joist centres and trims. These should be priced with the board, not discovered as extras during installation.
How to request a useful comparison
Provide dimensions, photographs and the postcode, then describe the intended use. Ask each installer to quote the same board level, step arrangement and finish.
A site visit allows Heritage to check door thresholds, drainage and levels before issuing a written quotation. That makes the price more useful than a headline rate without a build-up.
